A connector-area photograph can reveal a difference between two Cummins ECM candidates. It cannot explain the engineering reason for that difference on its own. A letter near a connector may identify a connector position, a manufacturing mark or a revision field; its meaning must be established before it is used in a purchasing decision.
It is whether the offered assembly has a supported relationship to the required engine application, and whether the observed connector details agree with that relationship.
Keep markings attached to their fields
Record an assembly part number separately from an individual serial number or other marked code. If a field explicitly identifies a revision, preserve the whole field and its label. Do not treat every letter on the housing as a hardware revision or assume that alphabetic order establishes replacement order.
A moulded marking on a connector can concern that connector component rather than the complete ECM. A sticker on the module may describe another level of assembly. Their positions in the photograph help retain context, but the relevant documentation must establish what each identifier actually means.
Compare the same view of the same interface
Label the viewpoint so that mating-face and harness-side images are not treated as identical views. Identify which connector on a multi-connector module is being compared.
Record visible shell shape, keying features, locking arrangements and cavity layout as observations. Distinguish available cavities from visible populated contacts when the image permits it. If dirt, angle or a fitted plug conceals the face, state the limitation rather than reporting an exact count from an incomplete view.
A geometric difference is a reason to investigate. A geometric match is not a pin-assignment diagram. Contact functions, permitted electrical conditions and communication support cannot be established by counting cavities or comparing shell colours.
A revision claim needs its own evidence
When a supplier says that an offered ECM is a later revision, ask which assembly reference has changed and which source establishes the relationship. A parts supersession, a hardware revision and a software update are different kinds of change. They should not be collapsed into the word upgraded.
Read the scope of any supporting notice. A replacement can be conditional on an application, configuration or associated requirement. Retain those conditions with the offered reference. Do not infer that a relationship applies in reverse or across every engine using a similar-looking module.
An unchanged connector does not prove unchanged software. A changed external detail does not prove a different electrical assignment. Both conclusions need evidence beyond the photograph. This is why an image comparison and a revision check belong in separate columns of the purchasing record.
Connect the engine record with the observed unit
Keep the engine identity and the fitted ECM marking together. If the installed unit differs from an earlier parts record, look for documented change history. Do not automatically choose the installed label over the engine record, or discard the current observation because it disagrees with an older listing.

Where the discrepancy remains unresolved, describe it precisely. For example, the offered marking may differ while the available connector views appear similar. That is an observation and an open question, not evidence that the modules are interchangeable.
Clarify whether the offer is for the ECM or a connector
A complete engine controller, a harness connector housing and a connector repair component are different items. Identify the requested assembly before asking for a revision comparison. Otherwise a supplier may answer a housing question while the buyer assumes the response approves a complete ECM.
Keep the quoted scope explicit, including any documented application preparation. Descriptions such as latest version or ready to use need a defined application and evidence. They do not establish suitability simply because the photographed connector resembles the existing one.
Retain the accepted reference, the supporting replacement information and the actual offered-item photographs together. Obtain any additional views through the appropriate responsible person rather than opening or disconnecting equipment for an informal comparison. The completed record should explain the revision claim, not merely repeat it beside a convincing photograph.
