A coolant-temperature value on an operator display has passed through several stages before it becomes a number on the screen. A sensing element responds to temperature, an electrical interface carries information, and a controller or instrument interprets it. The display then presents the value using the configuration of that machine.
The sensor signal is not yet the screen value
Consider a resistance-based temperature sensor. Its resistance changes with temperature, but resistance and degrees are different quantities. The receiving electronics need the correct relationship to interpret the signal. TE Connectivity's RTD explanation illustrates this distinction for one sensor type; it does not identify the sensor fitted to every diesel engine.
Other devices use different electrical outputs. A pressure sensor, for example, may provide a specified signal representing pressure. WIKA's pressure-sensor overview describes that conversion. The receiving input must be compatible with the actual sensor specification, not just its connector shape.

The receiving unit gives the signal meaning
The input definition connects the electrical information to an engineering value such as temperature or pressure. Range, scaling and units matter. A numerically plausible result is not evidence that the wrong sensor characteristic can be substituted safely for the specified one.
Keep a distinction between a directly measured quantity and a value calculated from other information. A screen may present both. The label beside the number and the equipment documentation establish its meaning; the fact that it appears on the engine page does not prove there is a dedicated sensor for it.
Some readings reach a display from another controller through the machine network. Others can be connected to an instrument through a different route. The architecture determines the path. Do not assume that every reading passes through the engine ECU or that every display has a direct connection to the sensor.
A message must be interpreted at the receiving end
Where the system uses networked data, the receiver needs the correct definition of the transmitted information. Message identity, value location and scaling are part of that interpretation. The explanation of engine-controller communication over CAN covers the communication stage separately.
The display also applies its presentation rules. A unit selection can change how a quantity is shown without changing the underlying physical condition. A value in degrees Fahrenheit should not be compared directly with a value in degrees Celsius, and a percentage label should not be assumed to mean a physical pressure.
Unavailable is different from zero
A blank field, an unavailable indication and a measured zero are different observations. The machine documentation defines how the interface represents them. Do not copy an empty screen field into a parts enquiry as a confirmed zero measurement.
The observation time matters too. Two photographs taken at different operating conditions cannot be treated as simultaneous readings. Record what the machine was doing and when each image was captured. A display observation provides context; it does not establish which stage in the information path requires attention.
Keep the full field label in the photograph, including any unit symbol. A tightly cropped number loses that context.
Use the data path to define a parts request
Identify the component that has actually been specified for replacement. It may be the sensing device, an input module, the engine ECU or the operator display. These occupy different stages in the path, and one unusual number on a screen is not sufficient to choose among them.
For a sensor offer, retain its required input characteristic and application reference. For a display offer, confirm the supported information and interface. A display that powers on has demonstrated less than a display confirmed to receive and present the required engine information.
Use the Display category when the operator interface is the confirmed requirement. Keep the sensor specification and controller information with the enquiry where relevant. A clear request names the required stage and its interface rather than asking for an unspecified electronic part to change a screen reading.
