A generator advertised as 500 kVA does not identify its engine ECM. The rating helps describe the set's intended output, but the controller still needs to be matched through the engine and product records. Start by establishing what the rating represents before using it in a Cummins parts enquiry.
Read the rating with its units and duty
A generator specification may list both kW and kVA, along with prime or standby ratings. Copy the complete entry, not just the largest number. Cummins presents these fields separately in its industrial generator listings. Two numbers from different columns do not describe the same specification.
Keep electrical generator output separate from mechanical engine power. Cummins's generator-rating explanation distinguishes these quantities. A number on an engine document should not be entered as the set's electrical output without checking its meaning.
Duty descriptions matter as well. Preserve the prime, standby or other stated classification alongside the figure. Do not use a rating label to invent operating-hour limits, overload allowances or a different duty for the set. Those requirements come from the applicable specification and operating conditions.

If the specification states a power factor, retain it with the electrical rating. Do not convert between kVA and kW using an assumed factor and present the result as a value read from the set's plate.
Add frequency and rated speed without guessing
Record the specified frequency and the engine speed given for the installation. Keep both values and their units. A photograph of a control screen showing a momentary operating value is different evidence from a manufacturer's rating plate. Label the source so the supplier knows which information is nominal and which was observed.
If two quotations state different frequencies or speeds, resolve the discrepancy before discussing the ECM reference. It may indicate a different product configuration or a transcription error. The rating information helps uncover that inconsistency; it does not tell you which controller software should be selected.
Identify the engine and the complete set
Supply the engine serial number and the generator product identity separately. A Cummins engine can be part of a package assembled by another manufacturer. In that case, the set's plate and control equipment may need to be checked through the package builder as well as the engine record.
Distinguish the engine ECM from the generator control panel. An enquiry for a box in the panel may concern a different component from the module on the engine. Describe the location and documented function before assigning the engine's brand to the requested electronic part.
Then compare the existing ECM's full identification with the engine record and the offered replacement. Keep rating information as supporting context. Similar output ratings on two sets do not establish a shared controller, and a common engine-family name does not settle the exact hardware reference.
Where the engine or panel has been changed, identify which documents describe the current installation. An original sales sheet can remain useful historical information, but it may no longer describe every fitted component. Preserve the change record instead of combining old and current details into one unexplained specification.
Make the supplier answer the configuration question
A complete enquiry states the set model, engine identity, output with units and duty, frequency, specified speed and current ECM reference. Ask the supplier to name the offered part and explain the application match. Keep any configuration work or prerequisites visible in the quotation.
For example, a supplier offering the correct hardware but leaving the required configuration unconfirmed has answered only part of the request. A statement that a unit is suitable for a certain generator power band does not close that gap. Confirm what is included before comparing it with another offer.
Browse the Cummins parts category using the confirmed component identity. If the available numbers come from different areas of the module, the guide to ECM labels and casting marks explains how to keep them separate. Ratings make the application clearer; they remain supporting evidence rather than an ECM part number.
