A CAT ECM can look different in two photographs simply because one unit has been turned over. Before rejecting a replacement for a connector on the 'wrong side', put both views in the same orientation. Then compare the connector location, locking features and cable direction as separate details.
Choose a fixed reference on the housing
Use a recognisable edge, label position or documented mounting face to establish orientation. Mark the top of the comparison image. 'Left connector' has little meaning if one person is looking at the label side and another is looking from behind the unit.
Keep an overall view beside the connector close-up. A cropped image can show the plug well while losing the information needed to place it on the housing. If the supplier's picture is a representative stock image, request a view tied to the offered part reference before judging its physical arrangement.

Do not mirror an image to make the connectors line up. Mirroring changes handedness and can conceal a real keying difference. Retain the original photograph and mark any rotation on the comparison copy so another reviewer can reconstruct the view.
Distinguish the mating face from the wire side
The face that joins the other connector is not the same view as the side where the wires enter. Changing between those views changes the apparent arrangement. Use the drawing's stated view when comparing cavity positions. A photograph should not become a pin-assignment drawing through an assumed left-to-right numbering sequence.
If moulded cavity identifiers are visible, keep them in the image and record their source. If they cannot be seen, leave the numbering unresolved. A matching row count does not prove which electrical function belongs at each position, and it should not be used to infer a wiring arrangement.
Mechanical keying is another distinction. TE Connectivity's off-road connector information describes keying features intended to prevent incorrect mating in applicable connector families. This establishes the purpose of keying, not the connector specification of an unidentified CAT ECM.
Record a different key, latch or locking arrangement as a specific discrepancy. Do not file down a feature, force engagement or substitute a lock to make a proposed controller fit. The part-specific application reference should explain the required mating arrangement.
Consider the connected assembly
A bare connector may clear the mounting location while the mated plug and cable do not. Compare the installed arrangement, including the direction in which the harness leaves the connection. Ask whether the offered drawing shows the controller alone or the space needed with its intended connector attached.
Keep any right-angle backshell, protective cover or separate harness adapter identifiable. Such an accessory can change the appearance of the assembly without changing the underlying connector location. Equally, its presence should not be assumed just because it appears in an old installation photograph.
The mounting orientation and cable route should agree with the approved equipment arrangement. A physical difference that requires moving the harness deserves review before ordering. Do not assume that a cable can be stretched or rerouted safely because the module's case fits the bracket.
Ask for the explanation behind a difference
If the proposed replacement has a documented physical change, retain the supplier's application reference and any associated conditions. Ask whether extra components are included or required. A statement that two modules are interchangeable needs to cover the observed discrepancy, rather than ignore it.
When the photographs agree, continue with the part and configuration checks. Orientation is a useful way to eliminate a mismatch, but it cannot confirm software, supply requirements or signal assignments. Those details remain tied to the complete controller and the equipment application.
Use the CAT electronic parts category with the original reference and the marked comparison views. If the disagreement concerns the number of connectors rather than their direction, refer to the separate guide on connector-count differences. Name the exact visible difference in the enquiry so the reply can resolve it.
